Benefits of a Family Business

There are many benefits to hiring a family-owned business.  Instead of just taking my word for it, here are some great points made by Francois Botha.  Francois is the Founder and Family Office Strategy Consultant for Simple.  In addition, he’s educated in strategic business and brand management.  He’s also a Leadership Strategy Contributor for Forbes.  He has first-hand insight as he was raised and worked for his family’s luxury travel business.  In his article titled Why Branding As A Family-Owned Business Puts You Ahead Of The Pack, he makes the following points:

“…family-owned companies embody stability, longevity, and if nothing else, an ability to get along. Even though branding a family-owned business often starts with the history, at the same time, a family-run business must be versatile and adaptable to survive, so add “tough” to the list of attributes.”

He goes on to mention that family-owned businesses seem more stable, customer-friendly, approachable, trustworthy, have happier employees, and are more productive.  We’d like to agree and expound on those traits:

1. Natural Chemistry & Teamwork- Being family, there’s a greater aptitude to effectively work together and interact with each other. The chemistry is already present and established.

 

2. Greater Response Time & Better Communication- Developing ideas and decision-making takes place internally without the need to discuss with corporate entities in a distant location. Employees can communicate and respond to inquiries quicker.  Being family, we see each other on a frequent basis and can discuss business regularly.

 

3. Increased Accuracy & Commitment- Family businesses take pride in their family’s name. They know that their personal reputations are on the line, so they make sure that commitments to their clients are kept and all expectations are met.  As Francois mentions, “… scandal or public mistrust of a family-owned business reflects directly back on an individual or the family members, instead of on anonymous shareholders. Happily, this creates even more incentive for family businesses to work together to avoid negative attention and increase brand credibility.”

 

4. Strong Values- TK Enterprises, Inc. is a family business that has been providing services in event marketing, appointment setting, sales training, & sales seminars for over 30 years. They said, “Everyone wants to work with businesses that they can trust. However, it can often be difficult to differentiate between the trustworthy and the non-trustworthy businesses out there. We would argue that family-owned businesses have legs up on the competition in that regard because the names of their brands are directly associated with their family legacies.”

 

5. Specialists in Their Positions- Families can identify each other’s strengths, weaknesses, interests, and quirks. Positions are filled by knowing the family member’s best traits and assigning him or her the job title that best suits.  For example, Faylon is excellent on the technical side of things.  He enjoys discussing sound and lighting gear and he’s the go-to guy when it comes to deciphering what equipment to use in any given situation.

 

 

6. Immersed & Prepared- Exposure to the business prior to being employed increases the knowledge/understanding of the field. For example, at the age of 13, my dad purchased a computer and desk and set it up in the office, right next door to the studio.  He suggested that I could help by typing up the music library for the DJ business.  As I sat at the desk to type, dad played music in the background.  He was very patient and informative; explaining the artist’s or band’s name, genre of music, decades of popularity, and most requested songs.  Through that, I learned music history.
